More realistic sound from your PC

I have been composing songs using the Midi software on my computer, but when I play them back, the instruments sound rather 'computerish'. Is there a way to edit the output to make the instruments sound more like the real thing?

No, there isn't. But there's another possibility. It sounds as if your Midi output is set for FM synthesis. For more realistic sounding playback, you should be using wavetable synthesis. Most sound cards these days are capable of wavetable synthesis, so check that this option is selected on the Midi tab of Multimedia Properties (accessed from Control Panel). If you can't see a wavetable option, check your sound card documentation to see if it supports it - if it does, the problem might simply be that you don't have the right sound card drivers loaded.

In wavetable synthesis, sounds are generated by playing digitised samples of real instruments. However, the size and quality of the samples varies between sound cards. The cheaper wavetable sound cards may still sound 'computerish' to a musician's ear. You'll need to pay a three-figure sum for a sound card that produces sounds comparable to professional keyboard synthesisers.
